Large format printing opens up a world of possibilities — banners, trade show displays, wall murals, window graphics, canvas prints, and oversized posters. But printing at scale comes with its own set of considerations. Here are five things you should know before placing your next large format order.
1. Resolution Requirements Are Different
For standard print jobs (business cards, flyers), we recommend 300 DPI. But for large format, the rules change. Because banners and signs are typically viewed from several feet away, 150 DPI at the final output size is generally sufficient.
For very large prints (10 feet or wider), you can even go as low as 100 DPI without noticeable quality loss. The key is: don’t just scale up a small image and expect it to look sharp. Start with the highest resolution source files you have.
2. Material Choice Matters — A Lot
The substrate you print on affects everything from appearance to durability. Here are the most common large format materials:
Vinyl banners: Durable, weather-resistant, perfect for outdoor events and storefronts. Available in matte or glossy finishes.
Fabric banners: Wrinkle-resistant, lightweight, ideal for trade shows and indoor displays. They fold down small for easy transport.
Foam board / Gatorboard: Rigid and lightweight, great for point-of-purchase displays and presentations. Not suitable for outdoor use.
Canvas: Premium look and feel, perfect for art reproductions, office décor, and photo enlargements. Usually stretched over a wooden frame.
Adhesive vinyl: For wall graphics, window decals, and vehicle graphics. Available in permanent and removable options.
3. Colour May Vary From Your Screen
Every monitor displays colour differently, and the difference between what you see on screen (RGB) and what comes off the printer (CMYK) can be significant — especially with vibrant blues, greens, and purples.
For critical colour accuracy, provide CMYK or Pantone colour specifications. If you’re unsure, ask us for a colour proof before committing to a full production run.
4. Factor in Finishing and Installation
Think beyond the print itself. Do you need grommets for hanging? Pole pockets for a banner stand? Hemmed edges for wind resistance? Lamination for UV protection?
These finishing details affect both the appearance and longevity of your large format print. Let us know how and where the piece will be displayed, and we’ll recommend the right finishing options.
5. Plan Your Timeline
Large format jobs typically require 2–5 business days depending on complexity, material availability, and finishing requirements. Rush and same-day options are available for many products, but planning ahead ensures the best results and avoids premium rush charges.
If your project involves installation (wall graphics, window decals, vehicle wraps), factor in additional time for scheduling.
